NOTICE

if you would hand it to an interested person if you can. REMEMBER
that if I do not hear from you for two or three sales, YOUR NAME IS
SUBJECT TO WITHDRAWAL from my maiing list.
THE BEST WAY to insure yourself, is to SEND IN SOME BIDS. I
want to thank my many customers for our pleasant dealings, the words
of general satisfaction received, and the prompt remittances. Some col-
lectors bought coins from me 15 years ago, and are still with me In my
sales each month. Especially do I thank you.
THE NUMISMATIST
This is an illustrated magazine on an interesting subject — coins, medals,
and paper money. The Numismatist is the official organ of the American
Numismatic Association, an organization of collectors and students of the
money and medallic art of the past and present.
If you are not a member, join the association and receive the magazine
for $3 a year. You will enjoy it, profit by it, and welcome it each month as
a fond fast friend.
Write me if interested. $1.50 will pay your dues and the magazine to
next January 1st. Now is the time to get in.
The association met in Chicago in August and had a very successful
convention.

To Collector's — In this sale, my 53rd, you will find many numismatic
items not generally offered. When a thousand lots of coins are offered
in one sale, it is impossible for me to call your attention to everything
of importance, but do not overlook the series of Canadian coins, many
large cents of medium grade, Ancient Roman and Greek coins, Soviet
Russia and Irish Free State sets, Broken Bank notes, fine half dollar col-
lections, Commemorative half dollars, 18 5 6 flying eagle cent, complete
sets of small cents, fine early silver dollars, pattern pieces, Numismatic
books, NUMISMATIST magazines, Colonial coins and paper money, en-
cased stamps, choice foreign silver, Lincoln medals, etc.
Terms — Prompt cash settlement after the sale, remittance to be made
by money order, draft, check, or in any way most convenient to purchaser.
Stamps accepted under one dollar only.
The usual charge of 5 % will be made for executing your bids, and for
packing and sending out material. No charge made on anything not
actually purchased. This fee is very low for the superior service I ex-
pect to give you.
New bidders must send references or a deposit of at least 2 5% of
total bids; otherwise their bids cannot be accepted.
To those known to me and who ha/e already established credit, I will
send out purchases on open account. In appreciation of this courtesy,
the purchaser remits promptly.
Coins will be bought as much below your bids as possible, as this is
competitive bidding carried out in good faith.
When two or more unlimited bids are received on the same lot, the
first one received gets the lot at a small advance above the highest actual
bid. Only the first unlimited bid can be executed.
If you do not know how much to bid on any item, write me and I shall
be glad to inform you as to its value.
Receipted bills are not sent out after your remittance as this is unnec-
essary. Your check, draft, or money order itself is a receipt. However,
if a 2-cent stamp is enclosed we will send receipt.
KEEP ON MY MAILING LIST and keep your address up-to-date by
sending in some bids. If you find nothing to bid on, request next auction
list simply by postal card to insure your getting it. You will find a great
variety of numismatic material in this sale, some choice and rare items,
and will be well paid for giving the contents of this catalog your careful
perusal.
BIDS MUST REACH ME BY THE MORNING OF OCT. 8th. Mail them
in time, so as to avoid disappointment. At each sale some bids arrive
too late to be executed.
Collectors of experience find that not all dealers classify coins alike.
My classifications and descriptions are based on knowledge gained
through 15 years of earnest dealing in coins. I have endeavored to re-
frain from over-rating the quality of a lot, which is so common. I believe
that the word “RARE” should not be over-worked.
Please remember my strong guarantee. If goods are not satisfactory
(you are to be the judge), you are at liberty to return them without any
danger of offending.
WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY
On file in my office are one thousand signed testimonials, all unsolicit-
ed; these may be inspected by visitors. Here are a few that were just
recently received:
“Everything you shipped me was perfectly satisfactory as usual. You
certainly do grade your coins well as you have never shipped me a single
piece that was not fully up to my expectations. It is a pleasure indeed
to do business with a reliable dealer such as you and I look forward to
obtaining many more valuable pieces from your sales.” — Calif.
3
“The pattern $10 pieces sent me were just as you represented them,
and I am more than pleased with their condition.” — Mo.
“I am nearly tickled pink to think I got two numbers I most coveted.
Thank you for your fairness in describing the coins and the ratings given.”
— 111.
“I wish to congratulate you on the excellent descriptions you gave my
coins.” — Calif.
“I have received check for coins sold and am very much satisfied with
same. Thank you for your promptness.” — la.
CONDITION OF COINS
The classifying of coins is an intricate and sometimes nerve-testing
effort. Even expert numismatists are disagreed on various points. In
my auction sales, it is my earnest purpose to give both buyer and seller
a square deal. It is quite natural and common for an owner to over-
rate the condition of his own coins, sometimes without realizing it. But
when a dealer sells a coin to a customer, he should place himself in the
customer’s place and abide by the golden rule. I want to have my cus-
tomers get what they expect, and try to represent everything fairly.
Therefore, I have adopted the following definitions of conditions of coins,
this feature being of the very highest importance in collecting. Please
make your bids according. And remember, that even in my auction sales
I guarantee absolute satisfaction in every way or your money will be
cheerfully refunded as well as any postage you have expended in return-
ing lots.
A coin in proof condition is one of that class which is prepared in the
mint particularly for numismatic purposes. This is the highest state
of condition imaginable and a coin in this condition has its maximum val-
ue. The planchet (bare piece of metal before struck) and dies are pol-
ished before the coin is struck (made) and this gives a burnished, mirror-
like, reflective surface. Never try to polish a coin. The only time this
could be done, is before it was made.
A coin in uncirculated condition is one that is in just the same state
or condition as when delivered from the mint. It must not be tarnished
or blackened, but must have a splendid general appearance. The coin
must be entirely desirable. Luster is usually abundant.
A coin in fine condition is one which shows to the naked eye no signs
of wear. They may have become tarnished or blackened, but seldom are.
As a matter of fact, a coin may have experienced considerable traveling
and yet be classified as fine if it has been luckily in good hands.
A coin in good condition must show every feature very plain. Coins
with part of the legend worn smooth are not good specimens.
A coin in fair condition is a piece which has been very considerably in
use, but upon which the most of the lettering, design, and date is clearly
readable. Moreover, the coin must be free from mutilation. If the sur-
face of the piece has been worn down so smoothly that the design, legends,
and date are not plain, or if there is a hole in it, or if it has been bent or
is corroded or otherwise damaged, then such a coin cannot be classed as
fair, as it is not as valuable.
J. W. Scott once said, “No two stamps if examined critically are
exactly alike.” I can say the same thing of coins. Therefore, it is nec-
easary to use intermediate conditions as follows:
Extremely fine — with not enough, original mint luster to be classed
as uncirculated.
Very fine — Fine, extra strong, well-struck, and desirable in general
appearances.
Very good— Everything very plain and showing very little wear on
any part. Just the highest parts of the coin are affected.
Very fair — Everything legible, but general appearance not worthy of
the classification “good.”
4
Other terms speak for themselves. Among these are poor, very poor,
holed, scratched, bent, nicked, mutilated, polished, cleaned, tarnished,
corroded, eroded, dented, rubbed, etc. These terms have the same mean-
ing in relation to coins that they have in other usage. See Webster’s
Dictionary.
It is nearly impossible to improve the numismatic condition of a
coin by any method, except in very rare cases, and then only at the hands
of an expert. By this I mean that if a piece is worn or scratched, it can
not be remedied by polishing. On the contrary, its condition may be low-
ered in degree.
PLEASE BID BY THE PIECE UNLESS STATED TO BID FOR THE LOT.
Thus if there are 13 pieces in a lot and you wish to pay $6.00 for the lot;
then bid 50 cents. At each sale someone bids by the lot. Don’t do this;
bid by the piece.
Read Every Word in This Catalog or you are very apt to miss just what
you want.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!
Please make certain that you know how to bid. The plan is explained
in the front of this catalog, and is so simple that most collectors imagine
no one ever makes a mistake in bidding. But in each sale, someone in-
tends his bids for a whole lot without so stating, which is wrong. If you
are not positive that you understand how to bid, ask someone to explain
it to you. Mistakes on my part are always gladly corrected and adjusted,
but if you make the mistake, is it fair to me to ask me to pay for your
errors? Thank you for reading this paragraph.
